Cease To Begin (LP)
Band of Horses
Amoeba Review
10/09/2007
A breakout success with their Northwest indie debut Everything All the Time, Band of Horses won favorable comparisons to the Shins and Built To Spill while staking out their own high lonesome sound. The Band moved to Asheville, NC to record their follow-up, and the southern rock vibe crept in for a welcome set of country-ish ballads and woozy barroom stompers. Ben Bridwell’s soaring vocals are equally at home declaring neo-hippie sentiments, intoning odd mystical phrases or exhorting listeners to revel. The pleasantly tinkling Fender Rhodes adds a vintage Stones-y flavor from time to time. A fine follow-up to a striking debut, that extends their original sound.
