Buoy [Import] (CD)
DJ Olive
Amoeba Review
James Elliott 05/13/2010
Brooklyn’s DJ Olive might be best known for his funky, experimental breakbeats and sound collage work, but starting in 2006 the producer set out to make a trilogy of ambient records designed specifically to induce sleep. The first in this series, 2006’s Buoy, arguably remains the strongest. Recorded for Australia’s excellent Room 40 label, Buoy immediately gains classic status in the ambient music canon. A single hour-long track comprised of musique concrete-inspired detail, field recordings, vinyl noise and beautifully warm drones, the music is a hypnotic fusion of William Basinski’s ambient work and the turntable experiments of producers like Philip Jeck. Richly detailed and addictively hypnotic, Buoy is electronic ambient music of the highest order.
