Biirdie (not to be confused with British rockers Birdie) exist in that dusky magic hour where light mingles with dark and the languid folk of 1970’s Laurel Canyon shakes hands with modern indie rock. The band formed in 2003 when vocalist/guitarist Jared Flamm and drummer Richard Gowen relocated to Los Angeles from Florida and met vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Kala Savage at a Halloween party. The trio, with some assistance from local L.A. friends and musicians, began cutting demos in Flamm’s apartment shortly thereafter and self-released the Glendale EP in 2004. After gigging around the eclectic Los Angeles indie scene for several years, Biirdie released their debut full length, Morning Kills The Dark (Pop Up) in 2005. Guided by Flamm’s world-weary broken baritone backed by Savage’s comely vocal cooing, the album mixed a soft blanket of lap top effects and melancholy indie rock with a tinge of traditional country music. Adding multiple vocal harmonies, an ambient psychedelic bent and tighter songs, Biirdie’s sophomore release, Catherine Avenue (2008 Love Minus Zero), earned the band a guest spot on the highly influential Morning Becomes Eclectic radio show. Known as one of L.A.’s best kept secrets, the band embarked on a national tour of the U.S. throughout 2008, widening their fan base one show at a time.
