Beatles For Sale [Stereo Remastered] (LP)
The Beatles
Amoeba Review
Kris Konrad 05/23/2013
North American LP debut in stereo. 180 gram vinyl with replicated artwork.
Although now touring constantly, the Beatles found time to record their fourth album in less than two years. While A Hard Day's Night contained all original songs, Beatles For Sale has eight original and six covers like their first two albums. Don't take that to mean that this is a step backwards in any way. Their new songs mark the point where the Beatles (John in particular) start to really reveal their personalities. The almost arrogant stance of many of John's songs on A Hard Day's Night are replaced here with darker songs about longing, loneliness, embarrassment, and the middle ground where you don't know where you stand. Even somewhat happy songs like "Every Little Thing" sound like someone trying to convince themselves that everything is all right. The open-hearted sadness and doubt of the opening songs "I'm A Loser" and "No Reply" sound like diary entries. "Baby's In Black" sounds like a blues therapy session with its screamed harmonies, swing and stomp drums, and distorted lead guitar (see Anthology DVD 5 for a brilliant live version). At the opposite end of the pain scale is Paul's power pop cooing on "Eight Day's a Week" and the romantic croon of "Mr. Moonlight." Musically, the band is ever more confident, comfortably covering classic rock 'n' roll ("Rock And Roll Music," "Words of Love"), R&B ("Kansas City: Hey Hey Hey"), and even country ("Honey Don't"). Beatles For Sale, with its folk-rock sound, modern structure and songwriting honesty, is the key to what their sound would be like through their next two albums.
