Banga (LP)
Patti Smith
Amoeba Review
07/10/2012
On Patti Smith’s eleventh album, the original punk poet returns with the strongest album of her late-era career. Perhaps after spending recent time looking back, following her hugely successful memoir, Just Kids, and her remastered singles collection, Outside Society, Smith sounds like she’s looking forward on Banga, even while working with old friends Lenny Kaye and Television’s Tom Verlaine, who lends his celestial guitarwork to some of Banga’s standouts, including the dark and dusky “Nine,” and the sprightly “April Fool.” Smith expertly mixes her traditional howl on snarling tunes like the title track with more traditional singing, as Smith’s voice has aged remarkably well (classic rock ’n’ roll ballad “This is the Girl” is a beautiful departure for Smith), as well as her trademark spoken word verses. Smith is one artist for whom the spoken word tracks are nearly always album highlights, and these are no exception, including the psych-jazz-inflected “Tarkovsky (The Second Stop is Jupiter)” and the extended lament “Constantine’s Dream.” By the time Banga reaches its closer, a laid-back cover of Neil Young’s “After the Gold Rush,” with backup vocals from Smith’s children, the album feels like a welcome celebration of Smith’s indelible contributions to music, poetry and storytelling, and the way each of them intersect.
