Arrhythmia
Anti-Pop Consortium
Amoeba Review
James Elliott 05/13/2010
Anti-pop Consortium’s greatest strength has always been the ability to merge high-minded progressive artistry with classic, rugged hip-hop culture. For all its heavy avant-garde style, the group never came across as weird for weird’s sake or underground art-preachy. Anti-pop’s second full-length Arrhythmia, also its debut for legendary electronica label Warp, remains the group’s strongest work. Expanding on the progressive forms found on its debut, Tragic Epilogue, Anti-pop return with the brain-tickling wordplay and progressive synth heavy production that made that record so great. On Arrhythmia the group is more focused, even adding hooks to the mix. It’s a devastating move. Priest’s line, “I’ve got to affect you in order to infect you” sums up the record’s agenda perfectly. Hyper-creative, groundbreaking music is rarely infused with such catchy funk. Arrhythmia proves Anti-pop Consortium to be masters of hip-hop, mutating the genre to new heights.
