Acrobatic Tenement [Reissue] (CD)
At The Drive-In
Amoeba Review
03/05/2013
After the military-industrial Reagan '80s, the kids were ready for a great shout of rock release in the '90s, and it arrived in many ways -- the blitzkrieg dirge of Nirvana, the G-funk crack party of N.W.A. and Death Row, the spastic post-hardcore bliss of El Paso's At The Drive-In. Cedric, Jim & Omar got signed by pop-punk label Flipside after a breakneck tour of Texas, performing explosive shows for tiny crowds. They recorded their debut LP for a reputed $600. Though they are supposed to have had great difficulty capturing their overwhelming live presence in the studio (until the masterful Relationship of Command), this starter record is surprisingly impressive and fun. Kind of like a not-so-burnt-out Fugazi, lighter and freer without the weight of the hardcore world on their shoulders, dying to show that a bunch of Mexican fuckups from Hell Paso can crack the sky with freaked-out, forward-thinking progpunk catharsis. Now reissued on the band's own Twenty-first Chapter label (named for the chapter of A Clockwork Orange excised in the U.S. edition). This gave a lot of nothing kids something to care about, and kept the hardcore torch burning for decades to come.
