Synopsis

Based on Swedish author Fredrik Backman's international best-selling novel, the story centers on Ove, the quintessential angry old man next door. An isolated retiree with strict principles and a short fuse, who spends his days enforcing block association rules that only he cares about, and visiting his wife's grave, the world-weary Ove has given up on life. Enter a boisterous young family next door who accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox while moving in and earning his special brand of ire. From this inauspicious beginning, an unlikely friendship forms, and all come to understand Ove's past happiness and heartbreaks. What emerges is a heartwarming tale of unreliable first impressions and the gentle reminder that life is sweeter when it's shared.

Sweden's official entry for the best foreign language film at the 89th Academy Awards, A Man Called Ove features an irresistible adaptation and sterling direction from filmmaker Holm. The director/co-writer finds the beating heart of his source material, while Swedish star Rolf Lassgård, whose performance won him the Best Actor Award at the 2016 Seattle International Film Festival, affectingly embodies the lovable curmudgeon Ove.

A Man Called Ove is one of Sweden's most successful domestic films of all time and will be one of top grossing foreign language art house releases in the US this year with over 200 engagements in all major markets and a projected box office of nearly $2 million. The film is also one of the best reviewed films of the year with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 92%.

"I thought, 'This is so good,' because this story has both elements of comic relief and sadness in it," recalls writer/director Holm of his reaction after reading Fredrik Backman's novel. "I called [producer] Annica Bellander and said, 'Ok, I really want to do this,' and then I met Frederick Backman, who I heard was very Ove-like — and he was a bit grumpy, but he said, 'Hannes, I don't know anything about filmmaking. So please, write the story.' So I can say that films can change people, but in a way, this film has changed me."
