Wreck-It Ralph appropriately loads up on big electronic noise for the soundtrack to an animated film about a video game character rebelling against his fate as a villain. Owl City starts the set with the fizzy “When Can I See You Again,” pumping up his emotronica with big blasts of radio pop sound. Novelty-song heroes Buckner & Garcia pop up with “Wreck It, Wreck It Ralph,” throwing a new-wave bone to adults checking out the film — which should be plenty of people, given the fact that the film focuses on arcade characters and the average kid probably has played all their games on a console. “Celebration” by Kool & the Gang shows up for more nostalgia, while younger, hipper songs follow by Japanese girl group AKB48, whose “Sugar Rush” is aptly titled irresistible new-wave pop, as well as Skrillex and Rihanna. The set’s first six songs should please stimulus-addicted kids while giving a few nods to their parents, and Henry Jackman’s score follows suit, with 8-bit synth sounds to remind us of spending too much time and money mashing keys at the arcade.
