Margaret Cho is a Korean American comedian, author, actress, and recording artist. Born in San Francisco, Cho attended the San Francisco School of the Arts and began performing stand-up comedy at age 16 in a club above her parents' book store. She started gaining national attention after opening for Jerry Seinfield, appearing on a Bob Hope television special, and appearing on The Arsenio Hall Show. In 1994, Cho won the American Comedy Award for Best Female Comedian and was featured in a short lived television sitcom called All-American Girl based on her stand-up.
Cho has performed many one-woman shows, some of which also became successful concert DVDs, CDs, and books. Her first off-Broadway show, I'm The One That I Want, premiered in 1999 and became a US tour, a live concert film, and an autobiography of the same name. Her next two tours, Notorious C.H.O. and Revolution, were also released as feature films. The CD version of Revolution was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album in 2003. Cho's second book, I Have Chosen to Stay and Fight, was released in 2005. Cho returned to television with the 2008 VH1 series, The Cho Show, and can currently be seen on the Lifetime television series, Drop Dead Diva. She has also been confirmed to be a cast member on the 11th season of Dancing With The Stars. Cho's latest tour, Cho Dependent, is also the name of her newest comedy music album. Cho Dependent was released on August 24, 2010 on Clownery Records and features Tegan and Sara, Jon Brion, Andrew Bird, Ani Difranco, and others.
In addition to her comedy, Cho has been recognized for her contributions to promote equal rights regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation. She has received awards from the ACLU of Southern California, the National Organization for Women (NOW), GLAAD, American Women in Radio and Television, the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF), the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), and PFLAG.
