In the early '90s, Chali 2na was part of a seven-man group (along with Cut Chemist and Mark 7even) called the Unity Committee who frequented and performed at The Good Life Cafe, a Hip-Hop gathering place on Thursday nights in South Central Los Angeles. Jurassic 5 was born out of The Good Life Cafe in 1993 and featured Cut Chemist and Mark 7even along with Akil, Soup (aka Zaakir), and DJ Nu-Mark. Jurassic 5, considered part of the alternative Hip-Hop movement, released their first album, Jurassic 5 EP (Rumble Records), in 1997. They released four full-length albums, including 2006's Feedback (Interscope), before disbanding in 2007.
Ozomatli, a ten-piece band combining Hip-Hop, Latin, reggae, and rock, was formed in 1995. Although Chali 2na left Ozomatli to focus on Jurassic 5, he continued to collaborate with them occasionally, including appearances on the 2001 album Embrace the Chaos (Interscope) and 2004's Street Signs (Concord).
In 2004, Chali 2na released Fish Market: The Official Mixtape (Traffic) as a prelude to his official solo debut, Fish Outta Water (Decon, 2009).
