Boots Riley is best known as the MC for The Coup, a hip-hop group from Oakland, California whose songs often call for social activism and speak to socioeconomic and political issues. Boots often uses humor to convey his politial messages, something that separates him from other politically-minded groups.
The Coup formed in 1992, originally with three members (Boots Riley, DJ Pam The Funkstress, and E-Roc). In 1993, they released their debut album Kill My Landlord. To date, The Coup has released five albums, including Genocide and Juice (1994), Steal This Album (1998), Party Music (2001), and Pick A Bigger Weapon (2006).
Boots recently joined forces with Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine) to form Street Sweeper Social Club.
