The Raven That Refused To Sing (LP)

Porcupine Tree's accomplished frontman sometimes sounds like he's single-handedly keeping classic prog-rock alive. You know, big, heavy, hairy symphonic prog, with oboes and mellotrons and double-neck guitar freakouts. Prog that's cerebral, challenging, and complex, prog like Genesis or King Crimson. Stepping away once more from the dark, phasey hard rock of the Tree, Wilson delivers his third and most satisfying solo work yet, a set of six epic songs based on ghostly tales in the tradition of Poe and Le Fanu, penned by Wilson with Hajo Mueller. Wow! The primary accompanists are virtuosic bassist Nick Begg and woodwind wizard Theo Travis, and together they weave dark, majestic, luminous novellas that deliver captivating power and dramatic tension. They even brought Alan Parsons out of retirement to produce! That guy truly earns his paycheck, bringing a vast, resonant clarity to the multilayered production, reminiscent of his work on Dark Side and Abbey Road. If you love classic prog, classic creeping horror, or you just want to check out something rich and fascinating that's a lot more ambitious than most new rock, light up the candelabra, pour a snifter of absinthe and drop the needle on The Raven That Refused to Sing. Steven Wilson will take you to a new world.
