Gauntlet Hair

Amoeba Review

07/15/2013

After a number of years and as many singles, Gauntlet Hair returns with their sophomore slither, a collection of punchy, psychedelic, pseudo-industrial ruminations on "White Zombie, Marilyn Manson," and what drummer Craig Nice calls "the stuff I would have in my discman in the back of my mom's car." What this means for the Chicago-via-Denver "avant-pop" duo is that they hired Jacobo Portrait of Unknown Mortal Orchestra to produce the album and that its reference points are slightly more British and slightly more erudite than their '90s-radio-goth-references might lead you to believe. The sound palette is considerably weirder and considerably more stripped down than Manson or Zombie, but the guitars and the weirdo-menace and there and it would appear that the Animal Collective comparisons they received in their earliest moments are starting to wear off.
