Amoeba Review

Billy Gil, Hollywood 07/23/2013

Strap yourself in for Fuck Buttons’ third album. Heavy-ass drums open “Brainfreeze,” and from there, the album doesn’t let up. The band continues to redefine what an instrumental electronic band can mean — purely visceral without succumbing to dumbed-down dance-pop tendencies, while still nodding to hip-hop on the sure-to-be fan favorite “The Red Wing,” which needs to be sampled and rapped over, pronto. Ethereal and hard-hitting at the same time, Slow Focus is unforgettable.

The way I see it, there are two kinds of theatrical menace. The first is the sort of all-in-the-eyes alley-at-night menace, the kind that leaves you humiliated and without a wallet. Then there's the megalomaniacal menace of the supervillain, the sort of menace that watches the city burn from the clock tower, cackling. The first, believe it or not, is totally reasonable, based on societal inequalities, taking what you need because no one wants you to have it. The second, is totally unreasonable, delusional, fantastic, all for the fun of just watching it burn and being the one who gets to do the burning. Slow Focus, the third album from Bristol-based Fuck Buttons, is the venn diagram wedge between these two kinds of menace, managing to sound hungry, desperate and filthy at a scale that is so altogether unreasonable that it manages to come off as oddly majestic. Think Black Moth Super Rainbow soundtracking an Olympic event (which Fuck Buttons, oddly enough, did) or Black Dice directing a regional production of "Stomp." This is music for releasing the giant robotic hounds, but the hounds are in disrepair and the damage they do is as much by accident as it is a focused hunting, leaky valves spraying scalding oil, nuts and bolts falling off at high speed becoming scrapyard shrapnel. For fans of the band's previous records, this album will appear less noisy, more polished, perhaps, with tracks like "Prince's Prize" doing some version of Squarepusher's recent output albeit a little grosser and less complicated. At the end of the day, as dense as it is, this is relatively simple, straightforward music, focused, even. It's an album about being huge and ominous, but cartoony, groovy, and fun in its polished junkyard jumper. Good job guys!
