Pickin' My Pleasures

Joe Goldmark

Amoeba Review

05/20/2013

San Francisco hot picker Joe Goldmark displays the versatility of the pedal steel guitar on his all-instrumental debut album from 1977. Things kick off with two originals: the funky "Chocolate" and the swingin' "Stone Country Swing," before moving on to a mellow, soulful version of the Stylistics' hit "You Are Everything." Other highlights include a rendition of the Beatles' "Something" where he deftly melds both George Harrison's slide guitar and vocal melodies into a seamless whole, and a dueling sax/pedal steel fueled re-imagining of Roy Brown's immortal "Good Rockin' Tonight."
