It is possible, if you’re in an uncharitable mood, to sum up the career of this great band thus: Van Halen, who towered over the ’70s and ’80s like the Colossus of Rhodes, became a punchline in the ’90s for its revolving-door roster of frontmen before seeming to implode entirely.
