The Beach Boys formed in Hawthorne, California in 1961. Consisting of three Wilson brothers – Brian, Carl, and Dennis – along with cousin Mike Love and neighborhood friend Al Jardine, the quintet began as a surf band that emphasized group vocal harmonies. Brian Wilson quickly established himself as a talented songwriter and producer, leading The Beach Boys to a series of hit records. In 1965, Bruce Johnston joined the band, allowing Brian to quit touring. This alleviated his performance anxieties and allowed him to devote more time to his increasingly ornate pop songs.
