Carmen McRae was one of the most famous jazz singers, who ranked among her contemporaries like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. McRae was born in Harlem in New York City in 1920. She was the first in her family born in the United States. Her parents were from Jamaica.
