Blunderbuss (LP)
Jack White
Amoeba Review
04/24/2012
Jack White’s solo debut is a high-flying success, thanks to a songwriting-first approach that allows White to mine his intensive understanding of blues and classic pop without the need for theatrics — or for a collaborator to sit in front. And his ability to subvert those same classic tropes he’s mastered is fully on display. He lays funny lyrics about lacking limbs over the organ-based blues of “Missing Pieces” — not to mention a finger-bleeding guitar solo. His “throwing White Stripes fan a bone” of a single, “Sixteen Saltines,” would appear to be big ’70s arena rocker about a girl, and it is, but its weird obsessive, cracker-eating lyrics give it much more personality than the typical throwback. At times you miss the simplicity of the Stripes, but with the loss of that band comes new musical territory for White, like the crazy syncopated beats of “Freedom at 21” and much more personal singer-songwriter material like “Love Interruption,” an affecting duet with singer Ruby Amanfu that compares favorably with, say, the White Stripes’ more fantastical Rita Hayworth tribute “White Moon.” The grown-up Jack White presented on Blunderbuss is a welcome addition to his great canon of work, with a record that grows on you before you realize it.
