The Stand-In (CD)

Amoeba Review

This Nashville rose is ready to bloom! Her new album The Stand-In is a wonder, a perfect set of shaggy, countrified indie-pop that sounds like something X might have recorded in 1981 if they'd decided to try to become the next Fleetwood Mac. Every song is a classic pop heartbreaker, showcasing her unbelievably cute Patsy Cline-bothered vocals. It's really a trifecta of great vintage singing, songwriting, and down-to-earth production that only comes along once in a while -- kind of like the Cowboy Junkies' Trinity Sessions, or Robert Plant and Alison Krauss' Raising Sand. I can't say enough about the warm midrange simplicity of the sound, letting the singers and the players shine through instead of overwhelming everything with contemporary digital bombast. Whenever I think the joys of classic '70s & '80s radio rock are gone forever, something like this comes along.
