The Lions
Amoeba Review
02/25/2013
"You can't roll a spliff on no MP3," sings Malik Moore on the title track of the new one from L.A.'s own beloved kings of vintage rocksteady, The Lions. And boy is he right, I've tried. The song celebrates what the band hopes (and we all hope) are signs that this generation is going "back to roots." This 12-piece ensemble (including members of the late great Hepcat) lovingly updates the warm, positive, summertime sound of classic late '60s & early '70s Jamaican music -- it's a party from the needle drop! The rhythms rock steady, the horns cry tough, and the singers harmonize like conscious angels. It's out on vaunted underground hip-hop label Stones Throw, and though this is their first foray into reggae, it's right in line with the dusted, crackly funk of labelmates Dilla, Oh No and Madlib. The ice cream truck turned Rasta truck on the cover is the mobile soundsystem of DJ Black Shakespeare, and this new Lions record is easily as much fun and funky as any of the original platters he spins around town. Also available on an all-45 set with dub versions!
