Desfado (CD)
Ana Moura
Amoeba Review
02/25/2013
Fado, the Portuguese traditional folk style, is a sad but uplifting music, named by a word equally related to fate and to faith. The lovely Ana Moura (lovely to look at as well as listen to) is one of the youngest exponents of Fado to be accepted into its top rank of performers. On her fifth album, her passionate, smoky voice is front and center, backed by the ringing fingerpicking of Angelo Freire, but she stretches the bounds of tradition to include a song in English (a very appropriate cover of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You") and contributions from Herbie Hancock. Her songs are so captivatingly bittersweet, it's easy to see why everyone from the Rolling Stones (who brought her onstage to sing with them) and Prince (who travelled to Portugal to record with her) are fans.
