You can be hip and cool and still love Christmas, as this collection proves! And have a wonderful time doing it. An impressive spectrum of indie rockers and legends assemble herein for joyously rockin' versions of their favorite holiday tunes. For starters, FUN. rock out "Sleigh Ride" in their jittery, melancholy style, with sleigh bells and twinkles. Then the Shins play a rich, shimmering version of Paul McCartney's '80s anthem "Wonderful Christmastime." It's not just the young folks getting in on the action -- Macca himself gives us "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire," and legendary soul woman Irma Thomas croons a shivery-good "May Ev'ry Day Be Christmas." There's plenty of left-field Americana from the Punch Brothers and Civil Wars, gutbucket troubadouring from Heartless Bastards and Andrew Bird, and lovely tunes from alt-rockers like Eleanor Friedberger and the Fruit Bats. Garage-rock queen Holly Golightly delivers a real gem with "That's What I Want for Christmas." Tough cookies may disdain holiday glop from Michael Buble and the Mannheim Steamroller, but no musical Scrooge could fail to dig this collection of cool carols. It's the perfect soundtrack for any hip Xmas shindig!
