The coming together of two brilliant musicians of instrumental music, Explosions in the Sky’s Mark Smith and Eluvium’s Matthew Cooper, delivers on the immense promise its pedigree would suggest. The debut album by the duo offers gorgeous floating soundscapes marked by Cooper’s dramatic synth work and Smith’s soft bursts of guitar noise. Starting in a catchy, pop-minded mode, “Entity” makes its sampled female vocals sound angelic over Smith and Cooper’s ethereal sounds. Though it’s ostensibly an ambient album, and Cooper’s piano work is certainly soothing, tracks like “Luminous Insects” billow into emotional, nearly overwhelming climaxes. The album breezes along beautifully, from “Peaceable Child’s” percolating synthesizers to “Sun Locations/Sun Coda’s” colorful, unpredictable sound flares. It’s a terrific journey, one we hope Smith and Cooper continue to take on future releases.
