Maximum blues comes courtesy of Austin wildchild Black Joe Lewis. Lewis screams his way through 11 songs while he and his band, The Honeybears, tear shit up with ferocious blues-rock riffs played with punk energy and overdrive. "Skulldiggin" is slow and sludgey, while "Young Girls" races with rockabilly stride. They even sneak in a suave soul single with "Come to My Party," as Lewis struts around like James Brown amid sexy horns and psych-funk riffs. While this is hipster-approved blues for sure (they even have a blown-out rocker called "The Hipster"), Lewis and co. are schooled in the blues — the slow and soulful "Vampire" sees Lewis battling his microphone with ear-splitting screeches and wolf-life howls. While their soul-revivalist brethren are looking cool in new suits, Black Joe Lewis and his band are rollin' around in the mud and having fun. This is the real deal.
