Amoeba Review
Billy Gil 10/05/2012
As a former college radio DJ, I may be biased, but damn if College Radio Day – The Album isn’t a wonderful testament to college radio and the many little-heard performances that take place on its airwaves every day. Across this two-disc set, more well-known acts appear, such as We Are Scientists (whose acoustic performance of “After Hours,” as recorded for WXAV FM at Saint Xavier University, is available as an exclusive only download available at Amoeba.com), alongside unsigned acts like Siren, whose excellent indie-electronica track “Flying Words” opens the album and doesn’t even sound live, it’s so smoothly recorded. From the Sundays-style folk of Paper Aeroplanes, to the heavy blues of 61 North, to the twisted vaudville of Qiet, there’s a great variety on display from the up-and-coming acts on the first disc, though the nature of college radio means many of the performances are acoustic, while the presence of acts like The Civil Wars and Delta Spirit on the second disc should nab plenty of fans of those bands, who are known for their excellent live shows. Released October 2, 2012 as part of College Radio Day, the album is an apt celebration of the spirit of college radio and a fine showcase for unsigned acts across the country.
