“Tell me tell me, since you went away, does the space breathe, do you feel a change?” Alejandra Deheza sings alongside a mechanized surge on Ghostory’s opening track, “The Night.” It sounds like a breakup song, but it could be in part about the departing of bandmate (and Alejandra’s identical twin sister) Claudia Deheza, which can’t help but make one worry Ghostory would feel like a band trying to find its way after losing a key member. Worry not; if their last album, the freestyle-bumpin’ Disconnect From Desire, was a bit of a departure, Ghostory plants the group back into dream-pop territory, as the submerged guitars and spectral vocals of “Love Play” will attest. Ghostory does strike a nice balance, though, between these spacier moments and the dance beats they’ve come to embrace, as in the poptastic “Lafaye” or gothy “Low Times,” which sounds like a female-fronted Primal Scream. While the twin sister feature may be missed, Ghostory doesn’t wallow in that lack; it revels in breathtaking pop thrills.
