You don’t have to be high to enjoy to Vodka & Ayahuasca, but it wouldn’t hurt. On this new album from rapper/producers The Alchemist and Oh No, the duo even declares “This is an acid trip” on the title track, and it’s hard to disagree. Each chemically fueled track is a head-spinning take on the kind of great psychedelic hip-hop pioneered by the Wu-Tang Clan and continued through the likes of Madvillain that comes down the pipe too infrequently. Spy movie guitar riffs, tinny drums, percolating electronics and freely associative rhymes spin hazily into one another, as do disjointed samples of puking, arrests and other mayhem. Their best tracks are a stoner-rap fan’s dream come true, like the opium den fantasy of “Dark Shades” or the violent rhymes and raw, heavy funk of “Gladiator Music.”
