Maldita Vecindad are one of the pioneers of the "rock en espanol" movement. Their full name, La Maldita Vecindad y los Hijos del Quinto Patio, translates to "the damned neighborhood and the sons of the fifth patio." The band formed in 1985 and began playing in Mexico City’s underground music scene, developing a fusion of rock, ska, and traditional folk rhythms. Their formation coincided with a new emphasis in Latin America on creating rock in one's native tongue, dubbed "rock en espanol."
Maldita Vecindad released their self-titled debut record in 1989. Their sophomore release, El Circo (BMG Mexico, 1991), became a landmark album for Latin rock, selling a record-breaking 700,000 copies in Mexico alone, which was unheard of for a supposed underground act. After their fourth studio album, 1998's Mostros (RCA), the band took a break from releasing albums and focused instead on touring. On March 30, 2010, Maldita Vecindad released their first studio album in 12 years, Circular Colectivo (Nacional). Today, the band is Roco (vocals), Pato (guitar), Aldo (bass), and Sax (guitar).
