DJ Bonebrake is the drummer for the seminal Los Angeles punk band X, and is a vibraphonist for the Latin Jazz ensemble Orchestra Superstring and for the Jazz quartet Bonebrake Syncopators.
Bonebrake began drumming at the age of 12. He joined the band The Eyes (with Charlotte Caffey of the Go-Gos) in the mid '70s. After members of X saw him perform with The Eyes they asked him to be their drummer. As X, DJ Bonebrake, Exene Cervenka, John Doe, and Billy Zoom released seven studio albums between 1980-1993, including Los Angeles (Slash, 1980) and Wild Gift (Slash, 1981) which Rolling Stone named as two of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
X took a hiatus after several years of touring and recording during which Bonebrake worked as a session musician, playing drums, percussion, and mallet instruments with a variety of musicians in both Jazz and rock settings.
In 2005, Bonebrake reunited with Cervenka, Doe, and Dave Alvin to release a second album as The Knitters, an X side project from the early '80s. X continued to tour between 2006-2009, including performing at SXSW in 2008, and at Coachella and All Tomorrow's Parties in 2009.
