Aterciopelados is Andrea Echeverri (vocals, guitar) and Héctor Buitrago (bass, producer/arranger). They formed in Bogota, Colombia in the early 1990s, releasing their first album, Con el Corazón en la Mano, in 1994. Aterciopelados combines rock with electronic elements and traditional Colombian and Latin American music, and often features politically, socially, and environmentally conscious messages.
They have released eight albums to date, including Oye (Nacional, 2006), which featured the song "Canción Protesta" ("Protest Song"). The song was re-worked for Amnesty International for the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and is now called "The Price of Silence." Their latest album, Rio (Nacional, 2008), drew attention to the issue of water rights in Colombia. They won a Latin Grammy in 2001 for Best Rock Group and won another in 2007 for Best Alternative Album (Oye), garnered Grammy nominations, and were named one of the top 10 contemporary global bands by Time Magazine. They have also released individual solo albums (Andrea Echeverri in 2005 and Buitrago's Conector in 2006).
