Ana Tijoux is a Chilean MC who raps in Spanish and French and is considered one of the leading female MCs in Latin America. Born in France in 1977 to a French mother and a Chilean father, Tijoux moved to Santiago as a teenager after the return of democracy in Chile. Having grown interested in Hip-Hop in France, Tijoux formed a Hip-Hop group in Santiago, Makiza, during the late '90s. Makiza released two albums, Vida Salvaje (1998) and Aerolíneas Makiza (1999), before breaking up.
Tijoux next collaborated twice with Mexican singer/songwriter Julieta Venegas, starting with a 2003 contribution to the film Sub Terra. But it was their song "Eres Para Mi" on Venegas' 2006 album, Limon y Sal, that became a hit and spread Tijoux's popularity across Latin America, Spain, and the US. Tijoux released her solo debut album, Kaos (Oveja Negra) in 2007, and was nominated for "Best New Artist" and "Best Urban Artist" by the MTV Latin America VMAs. She released her second full-length, 1977, in late 2009 in Chile and in April 2010 in the US on the Nacional label.
