Panos Cosmatos is a writer and director best known for his visually-stunning, cinematically unique science fiction film Beyond The Black Rainbow. Although he has been making short DIY films and music videos for years, Black Rainbow was his feature film directorial debut in 2010 and he has already been compared to avant-garde filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky and influential director Stanley Kubrick.
Born in Rome to a Greek movie director father and a Swedish experimental artist mother, Cosmatos spent his early years traveling all over the world before settling in Canada. Growing up in Vancouver, Cosmatos spent hours looking at VHS covers, reading the descriptions of horror and sci-fi movies because he was, ironically, not allowed to watch them. He would come up with imaginary versions of these films, a talent that would lend itself to the dreamlike imagery and narrative of Black Rainbow. Cosmatos' father, the late director George Pan Cosmatos, made films including Rambo: First Blood II, Cobra and Tombstone, but it was his Canadian film Of Unknown Origin that was one of Panos' earliest stylistic and thematic influences. Beyond The Black Rainbow was completely self-financed by Panos and has been released on DVD and Blu-ray by Magnolia Pictures.
