Flansburgh and high school friend John Linnell formed They Might Be Giants as a duo in Brooklyn in 1982. They attracted a strong following with their quirky, infectious pop songs, stage props, and their Dial-A-Song service (an answering machine playing only TMBG tracks). The duo released their first album, They Might Be Giants (Restless Records), in 1986 and Lincoln (Restless Records) in 1988, which contains "Ana Ng." Their third album, Flood (Elektra, 1990), featuring the hits "Birdhouse in Your Soul" and "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)," has since been certified platinum. With their 1994 album, John Henry (Warner Bros.), the duo became a full band. Their most recent album, Join Us, released on Idlewilde/Rounder Records on July 19, 2011, was their first album for adults since 2007.
TMBG began releasing children's music with 2002's No! (Rounder Kids), their ninth studio album overall. In 2005, they released Here Come the ABCs (Idlewild/Disney) and in 2009 they won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Album for Children with its sequel, Here Come the 123s (Idlewild/Disney, 2008).
