Swedish progressive metal band Opeth was founded in 1989 by guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt and original frontman David Isberg with the intention of creating the "most evil band in the world." The band has gone through several lineup changes over the course of its three plus decades of existence, with Åkerfeldt becoming Opeth's lead vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist after Isberg's departure in 1992. Opeth released their debut LP, Orchid, in 1995. Two years later, the group headed back to the studio to record a follow up, Morningrise. In support of the LP, Opeth embarked on a UK tour as well as a lengthy Scandinavian tour alongside Cradle of Filth. The success of the album won the attention of Century Media Records; the band signed to the label and Century Media released their records for the first time in the US.
Opeth's reputation continued to grow with the release of their fifth studio album, 2001's Blackwater Park. That same year, the band set out on their first worldwide tour, headlining gigs across Europe for the first time and performing at Germany's Wacken Open Air Festival. In 2002, Opeth's newest album, Deliverance, charted in the US for the first time, landing at #19 on the Billboard Top Independent Albums chart. By 2008, the band had made even greater inroads onto the Billboard charts, with their LP Watershed debuting at #23 on the Top 200. Their next two album, 2011's Heritage and 2014's Pale Communion would fare even better, each debuting at #19 on the Top 200. Another Billboard success, Sorceress, followed in 2016; the album landed at #24. Opeth's next album, 2019's In Cauda Venenum is being released on September 27th.Less
