Canadian artist Eric San is the force behind Kid Koala, best known for his work as a music producer, DJ, and composer. He is also the author of graphic novels Nufonia Must Fall and Space Cadet, and the creator of their accompanying soundtrack albums. San's musical career began while he attended McGill University in Montreal; immersed in the turntablism scene, he passed out an early demo called Scratchcratchratchatch to fellow students. In 2000, he released his first album, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, for which he designed and illustrated the cover, as well as a comic book included within the liner notes. In support of the LP, he set out on a lengthy tour, opening at times for Radiohead and Bjork. That same year, Kid Koala teamed up with Del the Funky Homosapien and Dan the Automator for their Deltron 3030 project; their eponymous debut was released in spring 2000.
He teamed up with Dan the Automator, along with Mike Patton and Jennifer Charles, for their band Lovage's sole release, 2001's Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By. Ever busy, Kid Koala also made an appearance on the 2001 self-titled debut LP from Gorillaz. He released a second full-length album, Some of My Best Friends Are DJs, in 2003, and a third album, Your Mom's Favorite DJ, in 2006. Six year later, Kid Koala released 12 Bit Blues. Followups Music to Draw To: Satellite came in 2017 and Music to Draw To: Io in 2019. He has done remix work for the likes of Amon Tobin, Yusef Lateef, Coldcut, and The Free Design. He has collaborated with Handsome Boy Modeling School, Mike Patton's Peeping Tom, and Josh Haden. Kid Koala has also contributed to the film scores for Baby Driver, Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Looper, and The Great Gatsby.
