Born in Texas, DJ, producer, and electronic artist Matthew Dear became inspired by the sounds of Detroit techno after moving to Michigan as a teen. He met Ghostly International founder Sam Valenti IV while attending a party at the University of Michigan. Dear's first single for the label was "Hands Up For Detroit" (1999). His next releases, "Stealing Moves" and "Mouth to Mouth," were released via Ghostly's dancefloor-friendly subsidiary Spectral Sound. Around this time, he began performing and releasing records under aliases, including False, Jabberjaw, and Audion.
