Within the first thirty seconds, any illusion that Foals are sticking to their patented sound of math rock by way of disco is completely shredded into pieces. Right when a new wave guitar starts to get a delicate rhythm, the music explodes with pure ferocity. Frontman Yannis Philippakis delivers a sucker punch of an album as Foals bring the volume to speaker-busting proportions as he welts out each lyric. Opener "What Went Down" might be enough to make you want to take a smoke break, but numbers like "Mountains At My Gates" and "Lonely Hunter" are the album's equivalent of Icy Hot. They make you feel comfy and relaxed as you get a taste of what made you love Foals in the first place, albeit grittier and a little darker. With What Went Down, Foals are setting themselves up to be this generation's Blur.
