Vol. 3 (CD)
Lee Morgan
Amoeba Review
John Schacht 08/13/2010
The last of three volumes released from a series of dates in 1957, this Lee Morgan session is the best of the bunch and one of the finer mid-50s hard bop dates. Morgan, who was still just a teenager, seems to grow in stature with every solo, and the sextet gathered here is just the right balance of veterans and hungry youngsters. And just as you can sense Morgan growing comfortable in his skin as a trumpeter, Benny Golson’s five compositions and arrangements reflect an equally impressive level of growing sophistication. Best of the batch is “Hasaan’s Dream,” a middle Eastern-tinged slinky blues that floats by like a dream, Gigi Gryce’s flute the snake-charmer for the solos of Morgan and Golson. Chambers – plucked along with pianist Wynton Kelly from the Miles Davis/John Coltrane quintet -- walks the bass up and down the neck tugging you along with him. “Mesabi Chant” and “Domingo” both cook at a high boil, allowing Morgan to show off his rapid-fire assaults, and “Tip-Toeing” is a burlesque blues where Chambers and Persip play off each other to fine effect, and Golson and Gryce deliver marvelously mellifluous solos. “I Remember Clifford,” Golson’s marvelous elegy to Clifford Brown, who’d died just a year prior to this date, makes one of its earliest appearances on LP here, too, and Morgan’s solo – set over Kelly and the other horns’ wistful statements in one of Golson’s finest arrangements – is a primer in restraint, as notable for what’s not played as what is. Morgan’s playing is filled with the emotions more common to someone twice his age, but he pulls off the tribute with utmost taste and elegance. Like the rest of the set, it’s a pleasure to experience.
