Critically acclaimed record label Table of the Elements specializes in avant-garde material packaged in bold, dynamic, and elaborate fashion. Accordingly, when it was time to celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2003, the label released a series of fourteen LPs dubbed “The Lanthanides.” Minimalist legend Rhys Chatham supplies Three Aspects of the Name, the eighth LP in the series. In it he takes three words from a Hebrew inspirational chant, repeating and layering them in multi-track drones. The result is meditative yet compelling, drawing the listener into a tangle of harmonic and melodic overtones generated by fundamental, one-note pitches. The packaging is similarly gorgeous; the LP is pressed on transparent red vinyl, with an image silk-screened in metallic-gold ink across the B-side.
