Thin Lizzy (CD)
Thin Lizzy
Amoeba Review
Frankie Delmane 11/01/2010
The debut LP from this Irish rock combo, at its inception a power trio modeled somewhat after The Jimi Hendrix Experience, is a mixed affair. Kicking off with the largely spoken word "The Friendly Ranger At Contarf Castle", bassist/vocalist Phil Lynott, drummer Brian Downey and guitarist Eric Bell, were simply expressing musical trends of the time, albeit with their own original push. Taking on the influences of such hot heavies of the contemporary scene as Cream, and marinating them in a folk stew of Celtic soul seemingly inspired by Van Morrison, Thin Lizzy's debut is a downbeat, heady concoction. The album is a bit all over the place in terms of structure, and contains some key moments detailing what would be heard on later Lizzy releases, most specifically in the gypsy balladry of "Honest Is No Excuse", a heart touching moment that predicts a stylistic construct Lynott would lean on time and time again, alongside a blast out rocker like "Return Of The Farmer's Son," exposing a sturdy frame work that would develop into a tightly wound formula in years to come.
