Amoeba Review

10/11/2017

Stars is one of those bands that's transformed so much and so organically in the decade-and-a-half they've been around that it feels like an effortless evolution. Originally starting off as poetic chamber pop, they've gotten dancier and catchier and are now writers of some of the most delicious pop from the last few years. Their last album, No One Is Lost, transformed the band the same way Belle and Sebastian recently changed, combining their quiet indie roots with a modern production that makes each one of these tracks a joy to listen to. Almost exactly three years later, There Is No Love In Fluorescent Light continues exploring the limits of electro pop and its relationship to indie rock. This is in no small part to producer Peter Katis who produced some of the best albums by Interpol and The National, and here helps Stars balance their new direction with a lush, modern production. From the opening of "Fluorescent Light," there's a sense of complete openness and free expression pushing the limits and expectations of indie pop. Torquil Campbell's melodramatic hushed vocal paints imagery of a past romance and is paired delicately with Amy Millan's optimistic chorus, resulting in a harmonious contrast. "On The Hill" is a fluffy, joyful track that shows you don't need a dance beat and high-tempo rhythm to move you. Millan's voice coos quietly like a ghost over the gentle, quiet melody making this one of the album's more sensitive and honest tracks with its bare simplicity and ethereal string parts. Even though Stars has gotten far less prolific in the last few years, their albums reflect more and more that the time spent away allows them to mature and grow in new and beautiful ways. There are few albums this year that are as catchy and emotionally involving as this.
