The Chronic (CD)
Dr. Dre
Amoeba Review

As the solo debut for N.W.A.’s second most notorious member (Easy E is still king), 1992’s The Chronic saw Dr. Dre merge his lethargic, hardcore delivery style with funk and soul. The result, of course, was the ushering of gangsta rap into mainstream consciousness. All previously held taboos on popular white radio received new perceptions from that day on. Several mega-hits appeared like a puff of smoke off The Chronic—songs that placed Tipper Gore on her soapbox forever more like “Let Me Ride,” “Dre Day” and “Fuck Wit Dre Day.” Despite the menacing lyrics that pepper a track like “Let Me Ride,” come on—dude’s just celebrating the fact that he made it through another day (and what’s wrong with being grateful? Quit hatin’). While written with a certain element of misanthropy, “Nuthin’ But a “G” Thang” proved the definitive gangsta rap song. Snoop Dogg’s unflappable demeanor and delivery is so laid-back, so casual in the face of misogyny, drugs and swirling police lights, that not only did those things become absurdly normal, but the party still follows the song a generation later.
