The radio airwaves in the summer of 1967 were filled with psychedelic sunshine pop, most of it coming straight out of sunny California. While the group The Blades of Grass was turning out material just as strong as the music coming out of the California scene, they were located all the way across the continent in the countryside of New York state, not a place you necessarily think of when listening to breezy sunshine pop. In addition to their unfortunate location, the group’s version of “Happy” competed for radio attention with The Sunshine Company’s version of the same tune. It was a shame as this group’s brand of soft pop is just as strong as any of their contemporaries, and the material they chose to cover is fantastic—particularly their versions of The Beatles’ “Help” and fellow New York natives The Left Banke’s “Walk Away Renee.” Other standout tracks include the dreamy “Just Ah” and “Just Another Face.” Rev Ola Records have done a great job compiling the group’s sole LP along with several non-LP singles for this re-issue. It comes highly recommended for those who are fans of sunshine pop.
