Swamp Ophelia (CD)
Indigo Girls
Amoeba Review
Joanna Ricco 05/26/2010
The fifth album for the singer-songwriter duo, The Indigo Girls, 1995’s Swamp Ophelia does little to differentiate itself from other albums in their discography, and that’s a good thing—the other albums in their discography are captivating in their complexity, both lyrically and musically. “Least Complicated” is a solid platform upon which Amy Ray and Emily Saliers’ vocal harmonies blend with earnest passion, while percussive elements keep it moving at a clip not generally associated with contemporary alt-folk. Swamp Ophelia is a folk rock catharsis, dishing up plenty of reflections on love and life, all with gentle intensity . . . though it’s not without occasional forays into harder rocking stints, like the rousing end track, “This Train Revised.”
