Stop Making Sense (CD)
Talking Heads
Amoeba Review
Michael Keefe 06/16/2010
Over the course of their first five LPs, New York art-pop quartet Talking Heads had built a robust cult following. Their fans included director Jonathan Demme, who filmed the band on their Speaking in Tongues tour. This resulted in one of the best concert films of all-time, Stop Making Sense, plus the excellent 1984 live LP of the same name. Released originally as a heavily truncated, nine-song sampling of the music from the film, Stop Making Sense was reissued in 1999 with the whole 16-track set list intact. In its full glory, the listener gets to experience the fantastic build-up that occurs in the film, as the number of musicians gradually swells with each tune. First, David Byrne performs a solo acoustic version of "Psycho Killer." Next, bassist Tina Weymouth joins Byrne for the gorgeous "Heaven," then drummer Chris Franz for the rollicking "Thank You for Sending Me an Angel," and guitarist/keyboardist Jerry Harrison on the funky "Found a Job." Backing vocalists, percussionists, and other players soon fill out the mix, aiding in high-energy workouts of Talking Heads classics like "Life During Wartime," "Burning Down the House," and "Once in a Lifetime." Toward the end, Byrne departs for a two-song detour into Tom Tom Club territory, and then returns for a soulful and rocking cover of "Take Me to the River." Twenty-five years later, Stop Making Sense remains one of rock's great concert albums.
