Start It Over (LP)
Riley Downing
Amoeba Review
Riley Downing and John James Tourville of New Orleans band The Deslondes recorded a new album on their own during a band hiatus, unconcerned with expectations or genre restraints. It's often fun to hear what artists can do outside of the realm of their main projects, and Start It Over is an enjoyably relaxed set of well-written tunes. The title track feels like solid indie rock while "Deep Breath" offers just a bit of country/blues, both songs elevated by the wry humor in Downing's deep vocals. "Good to See Ya" is a groovy blues/rock track while "I'm Not Ready" throws in just a little gospel.
