Stadsvandringar (CD)
Dungen
Amoeba Review

After the success of Ta Det Lugnt, Swedish band Dungen was snatched up by Virgin Records and embarked on their follow-up release, Stadsvandringar. Unlike their previous release, which was recorded solely by multi-instrumentalist Gustav Ejstes in his grandmother’s basement, this album was recorded with a full band in a proper studio (although quite honestly you would never be able to tell the difference). However, while the album carries Ejstes unmistakable stamp, there is definitely a more sophisticated sound to this album. The song arrangements are much more complex and feature stellar instrumentation utilizing everything from flute to fuzzed-out guitars and wild synthesizers. And while they still have that psychedelic feel that many folks fell in love with on Ta Det Lugnt, the band explores more of the territory of progressive rock and even progressive folk, particularly on tracks like “Sol Och Regn (Sun and Rain)” (an instrumental track that sounds similar to 70s prog-folk darlings The Incredible String Band) and the dreamy progressive “Sol Stigger Upp Del 1 & Del 2 (The Sun Also Rises, Pt.1 & 2).” Other highlights include the catchy title track and the beautiful piano-driven “Natten Blir Dag (The Night Becomes Day).”
