Siamese Dream (CD)
The Smashing Pumpkins
Amoeba Review

Smashing Pumpkins’ 1993 album Siamese Dream is a melancholy album that shows the sub-categorization of grunge coming into effect. Arty, fuzzy and intellectual, yes, but melancholy beneath everything, as the band teetered on the edge of disaster with drummer Jimmy Chamberlain’s heroin addiction and singer Billy Corgan’s depression. Somehow, against long odds, the Corgan and Butch Vig-produced album was exactly the follow-up to Gish that launched them into stardom. It’s a big drum sound all the way. “Today” was the breakthrough song of the release, with the surreal ice cream truck video, while “Cherub Rock,” “Disarm,” and “Rocket” all became hits. Many Pumpkins’ fans consider Siamese Dream the definitive album.
